Mariposa County is trying to come up with a plan to address how best to get rid of universal waste -- household batteries, fluorescent lamps and mercury thermostats -- and “sharps,” such as needles and syringes. So the county's Department of Public Works will host two workshops to design a strategy for a convenient collection system.

A session on universal waste will be from 8 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. Thursday, March 27, followed by a 10 a.m. session on sharps. The workshops are mainly for business merchants, health care professionals, contractors, ranchers and others who come into contact with these items, but the rest of the public is welcome to attend. Both workshops will take place in the supervisors’ meeting room in the county administration building, 5100 Bullion St., Mariposa.

For years crooks have been snatching women's purses and hoping they are fleeter-footed than the victim or other pursuers. But that doesn't always work.
The combination of residents getting involved and officers responding quickly pays dividends. Lt. Bimley West of the Merced Police Department said a 22-year-old Merced man was arrested by citation on a petty theft charge after he allegedly grabbed the purse of a 35-year-old woman Wednesday afternoon in the 500 block of West Main Street.
