Bob Woodward (of Woodward and Bernstein) likes to tell a story about why it's important to get out of the office and go see what you're writing about with your own two eyes.
He was a new reporter at the Washington Post. He was writing about restaurants with health code violations. He thought he'd found one at the Mayflower Hotel, a famous old hotel in D.C.
He was all set to write a blockbuster about how the storied Mayflower was serving contaminated food.
