I just came back from my first military embed. I spent two days with an Army unit in Ghazaliyah, a neighborhood in Baghdad. I chose the unit because I heard it was conducting patrols to homes of Iraqis who were displaced by the war and recently came home.
I wanted to learn what the families moving back are experiencing.
In a five-hour patrol, the platoon I accompanied visited six families. It was wonderful to get inside the homes of regular Iraqis and talk about what their lives are like. I learned about what returning families are dealing with, and I'll include that information in a story I'm working on now.
