Atwater's Girl Scouts will remain without a place to meet for a little longer.
I just learned that the state didn't award the city the $1 million it had requested to construct a new building for the scouts that would also be used by other community groups.
The state received 94 applications for the $30 million up for grabs. The nearest award went to Madera for housing rehabilitation. Here's a map showing where the awards went.

The name and mascot of Merced Union High School District’s new community day school was decided over pizza.
Teachers at the new school – which will open on G Street’s East Campus Educational Center next month – sat in a room and debated what the place should be called.
El Capitan was one of the names posed by teachers, but newly assigned community day school administrator Torrin Johnson said that brought back too many memories. That was once the name of Merced High’s Olive Avenue campus before it combined with the east campus in the 1960s.
