Buy local and stay healthy

Now it’s jalapenos from Mexico that are being blamed for stomach illnesses across the United States. It’s kind of scary, not knowing if our food is safe.
But there’s a good way to at least be pretty sure your food is as safe as possible. Buy local.
Yep, buy the peppers and tomatoes and melons that are grown around here. It’s a noble idea, but sometimes it’s hard to do. Take a look around your favorite grocery store next time you’re in there, and see how many of the fruits and veggies are grown overseas.
Why? California is the breadbasket of the world, and we grow everything from almonds to zucchini. Why does a local grocery store feel the need to get grapes from Chile, when there are vineyards growing grapes just as tasty down the highway about 60 miles.
Next time you are at the store, ask your grocer to stock more local produce. The state, and the nation, have such stringent health practices that it’s almost impossible to get sick eating domestically grown food.
If your grocer won’t help, change stores. Remember, walking out talks. And it could keep you healthy.
