Friday Night Heights: cheerleading tryouts at Merced College

Just like many teenage girls, I often toyed with the notion of being on the North Monterey County High School cheerleading squad. High school might have been over for me a decade ago, but I still remember wishing I was a Lady Condor, yelling loud at football games and pumping up my fellow students at rallies.
And although I never had the guts to actually try out, I did learn a cheer or two during my years at North County. I still remember these cheers, though I thankfully don’t find many reasons to perform them these days.
But it’s good to know that if I ever want to take another shot at cheerleading, all I would have to do is become a Merced College student.
Merced College will hold Blue Devil cheerleading tryouts this Saturday in the Golden Valley High School Cafeteria, 2121 E. Childs Ave., Merced.
Information and college enrollment registration will begin at 9 a.m. A cheer clinic will begin at 10 a.m. and tryouts will begin at 3 p.m. All interested students must bring a blank cassette tape with them.
For more information call Merced College Coach Julie McGhee at (209) 617-9675.
