More residents entering council races

Though Aug. 8 -- the deadline to run for office -- seems eons away, the council races I cover are finally heating up.

It's just a notch above lukewarm now that I got a press release from Joe Rivero (not the one already on the council) announcing his candidacy.

This means that it will be a three-person contest for two seats. Lesa Rasmussen and Gary Frago are the incumbents and now Rivero has tossed his name in.

In the press release, Rivero noted that he defeated two incumbents when he ran for Atwater City Council in 1998.

For a moment, I thought Frago and Rasmussen would be unopposed and stroll into office.

Up in Livingston, Daniel Varela pulled papers to run for mayor, the only one to do so.

I'd be surprised if Mayor Gurpal Samra doesn't run to keep his seat, though he's remained mum on whether he'll try to serve another term.

All 3 have "records" to run on---

Another thought on the JUNIOR RIVERO entering the race. Since he held a council seat in the past, he also has a record to run on. It will be interesting to see just what accomplish- ments he claims for that term of office. This will be a good race to watch.

Another Rivero.....

It appears that Joe Sr. wants to make it a family affair. He has been seen hitting all the local watering holes talking his son up. Curious that when he ran in 1998, many voters thought they were voting for Joe Sr (then a county supervisor). Could that be due to Joe JR. using good old Dad's campaign signs? Hey, the name is the same why not?? Can't say that I'd vote for that father/son team if I had the choice.

a tale of two votes

I hear that Rodrigo Espinoza is going to run for mayor of Livingston. This way he will have tow (oops, I mean two) votes, one as his current post as a city council member and one as the mayor. However, he will not confirm this. Like in the 2007-2008 Grand Jury Report, he is pleading the fifth.
