The much-needed rain of March didn't come, leading to an earlier spring in terms of wildflower blooms. Hopefully, they'll still by out by the time Mariposa's Agri-Nature Trail's "Weekend in the Country" comes around on April 26-27. Some naturalists are concerned that many of the bright lupin, poppies and other flowers now out in force might not stick around to such an extent that far in the future.
If you're worried about missing them -- go to the foothills now. Our photographer Marci was just out there on her way to Yosemite this weekend, and said the poppies are amazing.
Regardless of what flowers are still flourishing, Mariposa's Agri-Nature event will go on in many scenic locations. I'm writing a story focusing on the nature aspects of this event -- which includes native plant walks, bird watching and a presentation about hummingbirds. However, most people tend to be drawn to the winery tours, arts and crafts, and farms -- understandably -- these are also fun, important aspects of the foothills to explore.
But organizers are hoping to see more people on the nature walks this year. For more information, see Friday's Sun-Star.
