What Was This Election Really About?

I was as shocked as anyone that Bob Acheson lost Tuesday's City Council election.
I was also very surprised that John Carlisle, who was totally unknown to voters, got the most votes.
Some say the election was influenced by unions; others say anti-realtor backlash brought voters to the polls.
Did the anti-Wal-Mart crowd sway the results? What about the Hmong vote?
What do you think happened on Tuesday?

Here's what happened in a very short summary. The vast majority of people in Merced didn't vote. The majority of the people who actually voted were those who belonged to a union or a cultural group or some other organization that motivated them to vote in a certain way.
To me the big story isn't the results of the election, it's the apathetic population of Merced.
