Will California lead the way?

I just finished Daniel Weintraub's book "Party of One," which is a look at Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's two terms leading the state.
The book, just above 200 pages, recaps the recall of Gov. Gray Davis, which was the perfect storm that let Arnold in the door, and then breaks down the tumultuous time he's spent in office.
I remember my shock and embarrassment when this former bodybuilder and actor took over the biggest state in the country.
Turns out, he's been a savvy politician (at times) because he's avoided following the firmly-drawn party lines. Most Californians' political beliefs fall in between the philosophies of the Republican and Democratic parties.
Weintraub ponders whether Schwarzenegger's election will lead to a seismic shift in politics with more middle-of-the-road politicians being elected. Locally, I'm reminded of state Sen. Jeff Denham, who's built his reputation on supporting issues, like education, that aren't typical battle cries for Republicans. He also represents a district that has more Democrats than Republicans.
As the presidential race continues to heat up, it appears a step toward moderation probably won't happen this year.
